Lesson 2: How to Select Your Niche

How to Select Your Niche

Selecting your niche is the first and most fundamental decision you must make before setting out to create your new affiliate marketing business.

There are two questions you must ask yourself:

  • Will I maintain interest in this niche over the long term?
  • Does this niche have money-making potential?

Will I Maintain Interest in This Niche?

This is an important question. It speaks to the long-term success of your affiliate marketing business.

After all, you do want to enjoy working on your business.

And you are much more likely to do that if it's in a niche that you're interested in.

Even better if it's something that you are knowledgeable and passionate about. Note however, that this isn't essential. As long as you're interested, you can acquire knowledge through research. And who knows? Passionate may follow.

Can I Make Money in This Niche?

This question is at least equally important as the other.

Perhaps more so.

If you can't make money in this niche, then it's just a hobby.

Not a business.

And this is what you are building here. An affiliate marketing business that will make money.

Potentially life-changing money.

Search for Your Niche

The simplest way to answer this question is to do a search for your niche.

For example, if I do a Google search for "coffee", I see that there are literally billions of results (so plenty of interest but also lots of competition), links to authority sites like Wikipedia (a good sign), articles of general interest (which means others are getting ranked with potentially free traffic) and plenty of ads (so others are making money out of this niche).

Now you need to find out if there are vendors with affiliate programs, so do a search for "coffee affiliates".

You will find plenty of sites with titles like "27 best coffee affiliate programs" and "11 coffee affiliate programs that pay up to 80% commissions" so, while requiring due diligence (more of that later on) there's no shortage of potential affiliate vendors.

And the, of course, there's Amazon.

Because Amazon commissions are low, you want to promote high ticket items.

So do a search for "espresso coffee machine" and you'll find any number to promote.

At the time of writing, the best seller in this category was a Breville machine reduced to $599.95.

With 20,225 ratings and an average of 4 and a half stars!

So a great product to promote with an excellent review.

Sell a few of those and your online coffee business could be off to a brilliant start.

As usual, the devil is in the detail.

But don't worry. You're going to learn all that detail as you progress through this course.

Outcomes

At the end of this lesson, you should

  • Understand the questions that you need to research in order to find a niche that's right for you
  • Have done the research to select some potential niches that
    • you can maintain interest in over the long term
    • have good profit potential and
    • a selection of quality affiliates
  • Have chosen one niche that you will build your (first) business around.
